I planted a smoke tree shrub 2 years ago or so. It is now about 5ft but unable to hold its own weight. I have to prop it up. It is in good soil and looks healthy enough apart from flopping to the ground. Gets reasonable amount of sun. Any suggestions as to what problem may be.

If you want a bushy shrub you need to prune it back after planting to force it to grow more branches. Try 'googling' shrub pruning methods for help with diagrams or your library will have plenty of books giving different pruning methods. (You will be supporting your local facilities into the bargain).

Thanks for the advice.
I agree with madmaggot, cotinus can be hard pruned, the branches will grow stronger and the leaves bigger. I wouldn't do it until spring though, enjoy the autumn colour :o)
