Spreadsheets & VAT

Hi, can anyone give me the formula for getting the VAT element off a gross figure. I know when VAT was 17.5%, you would multiply the gross amount by 7 then divide by 47 and this would give you the VAT amount - but I cannot work it out on 20%. thanks in advance

I have a hearing problem, therefore need subtitles on TV. I don't need to read word for word, the whole sentence sort of flashes at me and I immediately know what is being said. For instance people I know who hear perfectly, cannot follow the subs & watch the TV at the same time, whereas I do both. My daughter is also an excellent reader - she can also read very fast out loud, but cannot necessarily absorb the material she is reading. She cannot read a joke on paper or text and find it funny - she see's exactly what is written, in the same way she rarely understands irony, sarcasm - she takes it literal. Given that she's 14, if she hears someone swear or say a rude word then she will laugh at that, but she can't get a joke. I know dyslexia is closely associated with dyspraxia, but I'm not sure if it applies to her or me? But, yes, maybe the discalcula - thanks for pointing it out, it's certainly an interesting theory.
