Graunching noise

Not all the time but sometimes when I am gently braking and occasionally when turning slowly I am getting a horrible metallic graunching noise. I've booked the car in but would appreciate any thoughts on the potential cause.

could be drive shaft ? but sounds more like metal to metal,which means your brake pads are worn out ,and need replaceing,not a major job

Brake pads I like, I was concerned that the suspension or worse had been knackered by the dirt tracks and hills I've been negotiating.

Couldn't quite fathom how turning would be an issue with brake pads though.

Bearing in mind what you just said make sure you haven't got anything 'stuck' in the wheel arches, like a branch. Or possibly a stone stuck between caliper and caliper water shield.

ah you did not say you had been on dirt track,now it could be anything ? get it check out to be on safe side .

Pads partly metal to metal
CV joint in driveshaft.

Would have helped if we knew the vehicle! It could be a ruddy tank!

Tell us what it is when you find out, eccles - I get the same sort of noise sometimes, and it was hideous last week when someone was sitting in the back behind the driver.

I would say that if there is metal to metal noised whilst braking then your pads and your discs need replacing rather sooner than later for safety's sake.

it could just be your brake pads - not necessarily the discs as well - might not be so bad :)
