My Father-in-law, who wouldn't normally ask for any assistance in the kitchen, has done me the great honour of asking me to produce one of my much-loved trifles for Christmas Day pudding.

Is there a particular dish your loved ones appreciate you for?

you won;t convince me, cold custard and i have a mental block with trifle! :-)
Hubby does 2 very popular nibbles dishes. One is for chilly prawns and the other is for doctored sausages.

Thanks to DT, I now cannot stop obsessing over Lobster Thermidor...
golly, NoM, your trifle sounds wonderful. it's now in my recipe book as 'No Mercy Trifle' which by the sounds of it is a good name :)
i wonder if it would work with choc muffins, i'm not a huge fan of the strawberry and white choc ones, maybe it would turn out like a black forest trifle.
i do one which is (from the bottom up) choc cake, booze, bananas, dessicated coconut, custard, cream and crumbled flakes. no jelly near it, very quick and easy to assemble.
lol @chilly prawns i have a great mental image

trigs i love eggs (but not with gravy) you can't get me with that bit i shall ignore the rest
I love making it, that moment when the bechamel and the vinegar and herb reduction come together to make the Thermidor sauce....heaven in a pan, and even better on the Lobbie....(a good sized one)

Ethandron, I suppose it would work with any sort of muffins. If I were to add alchohol, I would probably add Chambord, as cherry licqueur can be too sickly. However, I just love the version I do as it is, so probably wouldn't make it a boozy one.

I bet your version would be lovely with Malibu... very West Indian!
