My wife’s father accidentally shot and killed himself 20+ years ago. She was young and doesn’t know all the details and doesn’t talk about it. Is there some kind of record kept of situations like this that I could look up what exactly happened? If so, how would I go about getting a copy of it?

yes there would be! why not contact the local newspaper, coroner or police department who dealt with it?
