I've recently bought a hand held steam cleaner but the instructions
advise not to use an extension lead with it, but that's the only way I
can use it in in the bathroom because the flex on the steamer isn't
long enough to reach. Do you think using an extension lead will really
do any harm? TIA

I can't think of any reason. What power rating is it?
Question Author
1200w, voltage: 220-240-50Hz
As long as it's a 13amp lead and not stupidly long and most importantly make sure it's fully unwound if it's a coil type lead it should be fine.

If your unsure just check the lead isn't getting warm
It may be an attempt to prevent it being used in bathrooms. I assume the fixed lead is sort of 'normal' length for electrical appliance. Normally, that sort of power would not be a problem with extension.

Thank you both very much
no i don't think it will do any harm, its likely to be a disclaimer to say that if your product fails or your house burns down then it wll be because of the extension lead.

just make sure you have a suitably rated and length of lead, as you should unravel the whole thing (not leave it coiled up - v. dangerous). also get one of those rcd plugs (tenner from b&q) for added safety.
"make sure it's fully unwound"
Reminds me of a gig we did in a marquee outside a pub.
The drummer said "leave it to me, I've got a really long extension lead".
What he didn't tell us was that it was 30 metre lead, and he left 20 metres of it on coiled on the drum. 15 minutes into the first set, and you can imagine what happened.
the caretaker walked in asked if he could turn the lights out ?

Forgot the words to the song?
I would have thought 20M of cable wrapped round his drum would have effected the sound somewhat.
Why would a huge inductor in series in the mains inlet lead impact the quality of the audio sound, Chuck?
