Re-writable CDs

I have just recently discovered how useful 'memory sticks' or USB sticks are, with some help from ABers. This makes me wonder if ordinary re-writable CDs are old fashioned and out of date. Are they still necessary and, if so, for what purposes?

Itunes, can't find how to download music from there onto a stick, have to use a CD.

I had to use a rw cd just the other day, to burn a bootable Ubuntu disk.
Any cd would have done, I suppose.

They are still useful for playing music in cd players, especially in a car on on holiday. There are very few laptops that play music well at volume without using either headphones or external speakers.

Handy too for putting pics on and sending to ancient relatives who don't have a computer but does have a dvd player that will display from a cd.

I don't mind giving cds away, but I'm not so free with memory sticks.

Thanks for your useful answers - I'll hang on for a while to see if there are any other ideas before giving about half a dozen rw CDs to a jumble sale.

Due to the transitory nature of the stuff most people store on memory sticks – CDs are very useful in making backs ups of important data.

Even though my desktop PC has two physical hard drives (copies of import stuff on both drives), I regularly back up important stuff to CD – which are date marked and securely stored.

At one time I used RW-CDs; overwriting the previous backup. But with the cheapness of CDs, I don’t bother using a RW disk anymore.

Any of you out there not making regular optical disk backups – must be of the view that hard drives never fail.

Hymie, I back up to an external hard drive and the cloud.

rocky go to your docs, then your music, then i tunes then media, you will find all music in seperate files, copy by dragging to external file (usb). This is how i save to external hard drive.
