The independent channels are all struggling to survive. ITV1 in particular has come close to closing down several times over the past year or two. (It's lost 80% of its advertising revenue).
There is only a finite amount of advertising revenue which, through the advent of digital TV, is now spread across a greater number of channels. Further, advertisers are now switching the majority of their output to online media (particularly to social networking sites). All of this has come about at the same time as an economic downturn, which has seen companies cutting back on their advertising budgets.
You can expect to see several commercial channels disappearing within the next year or two. Those which are jointly owned by the BBC (such as the UKTV group, including Dave, Yesterday, Really and GOLD) will probably survive but some of the ITV group, including ITV1, might well go under. If so the programmes which attract lots of advertising (such as Coronation Street) will survive, but they'll move to Sky.

There are too many channels and only so many programmes to fill them so you are bound to have the same old rubbish recycled over and over again and then sold to another channel to be shown more times. And why are National Geographic saying their current run of 'Banged Up Abroad' is new when it is a re-run of the last series? If it wasn't for the trouble & strife wanting Sky Sports I'd ditch my Sky and be quite happy with Freeview.
... lots of people still havent seen them though
it means you are not concerned about missing them as you know they will be on again... i suppose that the thing with having so many channels - they have to fill them up and when they gain the rights to show a film they arent going to just show it once, they will get their 'moneys worth'
virgin media dont control what is shown... they are just a provider.
the tv stations control what they show.

i agree that repeats do have to happen but my annoyance this year is the timings films that were on on one channel were on the next day on another the next day and then shown again following week some films like stand by me was on 5 times in 2 weeks then you have the + 1 channels so its on again hour later its deffo the worst ive ever seen repeats this year
