Taking into account there's no need for staff, perhaps it could be a way of bringing back smoking into pubs?

/// The only downside to the smoking ban that I can see is that now people tend to bring their kids into pubs. ///
Must agree with you there, kids yelling, shouting and running everywhere.
How times have altered, when we took our children to a pub, we had to sit outside with them.
Now it is the smokers who have to sit outside.

Not all pubs are 'family friendly' and its lovely to be able to go out for a meal/drink now which I couldn't before because of the smoking ban. Personally I feel unless there is a proper family area then children don't belong in pubs except perhaps for sunday lunchtimes when a family get together seems more appropriate. As for self service pumps why not if you don't mind what you are drinking...makes it easier for real ale fans to get served.
