Library books on Kindle

I have an iPad on which I can download books from the library. In would much prefer a Kindle to carry about with me as it is much lighter but have been told you cannot download library books to a Kindle. Does anyone know if this is true? I am on my own and read a lot so find library books are my cheapest option.

What do you mean by library books? There are thousands of free books for the Kindle.

Yes, I meant e-books from the public library. I get them all the time on the iPad, you can have 9 at a time for 3 weeks.

Why not just download them for free from Amazon?

Because some of the newer ones you can get from the library are not free on Amazon.

I asked my local library about this 2 weeks ago. They said that because Kindle is affiliated with Amazon you can`t download library books. Kindle wants you to buy books - they don`t want you to get them free. The guy in the library did show me on the library website books that can be downloaded. They could only be downloaded to other e-readers (Sony etc) and the choice was very limited.
