there are sedatives you can get over the counter at the pet shop, they dont really send the dog to sleep, they'll just keep him calm and quiet for a while-like he's a bit drunk!

Even in a veterinarian hospital, some dogs die when sedated. It's an inexact science concerning the amount of any sedation in relation to the dog's size. Additionally, you'll make your Aunt extremely happy, if the dog, like some, loses control of its bladder and/or bowels during sedation. One other cheerful note, all animals, including dogs, often vomit up medications... I would listen to woofgang...

If it's only for 20 mins, then I wouldn't bother. It's not really fair to the dog.

If it is a big issue with the dog needing to travel, speak to your vet and get them to check the dog out and prescribe something for it. My dog goes absolutely loopy with fear at the sound of firworks and the vet prescribed a sedative with proper concise instructions on how to give them to the dog/how much etc.

That would be my advice. i'd be interested to know where clanad gets their "facts" from as the vet didn't mention anything like that to us.

PS clanad is dead right, just like us dogs can and do lose continence when sedated and or throw up, also like us if they throw up when sedated they risk inhaling vomit and choking ITS NOT A GAME

Some sedatives (the most common one is ACP) can cause a dog to have an epileptic fit, even if it has never shown any signs of epilepsy. Do not give anything to a dog unless prescribed by a vet, and then make sure the vet knows and explains the risks. Also the amount given can vary - one dog can take say four ACP's and be slightly dozy and another the same size can have half a tablet and be totally zonked out.

if you just want to keep the dog calm, and not necessarily sedated (which frankly, sounds a bit like overkill for a 20 minute journey) then why not try some DAP. (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) you can get it as a plug in thing for the house, but more usefully for you, as a spray. Available from your vet. You can spray it onto a neckerchief (which my dog wears alot, i'm quite partial to doggies in small items of clothing) and tie the neckerchief round your dog. Alternatively, you could ask your aunt for one of her old sweaters and spray it onto that and put it where the dog will be lying in the car. both scents should calm the dog down.

The pheromone I think is an imitation of the same pheromone that is released by a lactating female dog, and thus that is why dogs find it calming. It's pricey, but I have heard good reports about it.....
