Should I accept the offer.?

Today I have taken delivery of a new Fridge/Freezer and the firm of Hotpoint has offered me an extended two year guarantee for parts and labour in the sum of £69. (3yrs in total) Consequently, I am in a dilemma, bearing in mind that a single 'call-out' can exceed £100.
I have always taken the view that if an electrical item survives 12months it can go on indefinitely; as was the case with my original 'Hoover' f/f which lasted for 28yrs....Full story:-

Well that's hardly "indefinitely!... but yes, I tend to agree with you, most electrical stuff these days goes wrong quickly if it's going to.

Fridges, freezers and the combination are about the most reliable domestic appliances there are - unless one buys a mickey-mouse brand - which you haven't. That is why it costs relatively little to purchase an extended warranty.
All there is to go wrong in a fridge/freezer is one (or two) electric motors with compressors attached to the shaft(s). Not like your average washing m/c with their multiple motors, valves, timers etc.
For peace of mind you may wish to do this, but I reckon that are poor value for money.
My beer fridge (kept in the garage) has been going since 1983 - it was once our domestic fridge.

Total purchase cost plus delivery (Hotpoint FFA52) and old item taken away £319.99.
Chuck I get the impression you would suggest that I Insure for £69. but the buildersmate appears to be thinking more along my lines.:-)
I like bigbadmarty's reasoning and am agreeing with what sunny-dave has said.
Further advice is welcomed.

If it was something that does tend to develop faults like a washing machine I'd take them up on it but not for a fridge/freezer as they don't break much. Bear in mind this will become an annual event - after 4 years you will have paid about the price of a new one anyway so personally I wouldn't bother.
Well I never take out these. They are incredibly expensive and they'll usually find a way of not paying and modern equipment is pretty reliable anyway, so if it survives the manuafacturers guarantee then it'll go on a lot longer. It always makes me laugh when they sell you this stuff on reliability then when you agree to buy it they suddenly start trying to sell you extended guarantees! PMSL!
Ron. Have a read of this & do some more research if you think it's worth it. Personally I would be inclined to keep the extra cash back ( having spent £320) but of cause you will make up your own mind on that decision.

Hi again Ron.....I am a smoker and have already worked-out that one packet less per week of ciggies would pay for a new fridge; if it fails after it's guarantee period of twelvemonths. However, I am now going along with your earlier posting and will pursue European legislation if things go wrong.
