Where is everybody? Posting somewhere else? What an intricate construction. I have been delighted by the subtlety of this and now have a full and functioning grid but I am wondering how it fulfilled all the stages expressed in the preamble. Tea Leaves has done it again - thank you!

The penny eventually dropped with respect to the clashes - a neat little bit of lateral thinking imposed by TL. I think there may be several (genuine) possibilities for the below the grid entry (which if I'm right simply has to be below the grid), not least because I haven't seen anything appropriate in treating the grid as a wordsearch, Just as well, in the absence of any further coin dropping, to accept the option of not bothering. I'll be annoyed on solution day if it turns out to be really clever.
