The demise of the top 40.

I am in my 30s and, as a music lover, would hate to think i'm over the hill, but...please tell me i am not alone in thinking that the majority of Top 40 comprises of utter shoite?

As a teen I was a massive chart record buyer so now being 40 something, the question I ponder is whether I would still buy chart music today if I was a teen and have to say no I wouldn't.
I actually like rap compared to a lot of people in this thread and feel it is underrated. Some rap is rubbish of course but some is extremely well crafted and as for using samples I again think that in itself is a skill.

It is easy to stagnate and listen to tried and tested formulae but whenever I can I try and listen to new stuff.

I think it's always been the same. I'm in my 30s and I remember a time when bands like Starsailor and Embrace were releasing some really good music and it wasn't having any sort of impact on the top 40 but eurotrash pop such as Scooter were getting number 1 records. I think you need to look past the top 40 - there is still some fantastic music being made and released it's just not in the mainstream. As a fan of live music also, I don't necessarily think it's always a bad thing - I've seen some fantastic bands for £15 - £20 a ticket, that a year or two later when they've hit the big time and everyone knows who they are (Kings of Leon) they're selling out arenas at £60 a ticket!

I've heard of half a dozen on that list but I wouldn't know their music. Now the sixties stuff that was played on the BBC over the last couple of weeks - I knew all of that - and all the words! I don't know that current stuff will stand the test of time, but the youngsters nowadays still seem to know and like modern versions of our favourites.
