hiya we took on a 9mth old dog(jack russell x chihauhua) about 7 weeks ago now from a friend of mine that to be fair knew nothing about dogs and had 2 young kids and the dog was becoming too much for her. When he came to us he had a terrible diet (whatever the kids used to drop!!) and wouldnt eat regular dog food his toilet habits were terrible and he was being sick as he kept eating stuff off the floor or out of the bin we gradually got better with his habits and have slowly with the help of a dog trainer friend improved :) when he came to us the first thing i did was fast him for 12 hrs and then started him on pure chicken and rice then found he likes vegetables so i added mixed veg to it, all i want to know is if anyone has some other easy recipes for me to try on him his toileting is great now and he has an appetite for his dinner which is great hes a lovely little dog just going to take time and effort by us all to make him better :)

I get pollack fillets (from lidls (cheap)) for our JR cross. 3 mins in the microwave and mash in with rice and peas and whatever is going.
I do give her a good quality dried all in one food (Eukanuba suits her) but mix it with home cooked stuff. She picks out the carrots as she hates them and carefully places them at the side of her dish - good mannered. Using the Eukanuba ensures she gets the oils and vitamins.
We also eat quite a bit of oily fish and she gets her share!
If I make a chicken stock I also pour that over her food.
She has a rather delicate tum, but I have found Morrisons Gourmet food for small dogs to suit her, so she has this about three days a week.
You are doing very well.

lankeela he has 2 meals a day as when i first got him i played around with his diet a bit and found that anymore than that and he was sick as he didnt need the extra bit. He is absolutely thriving and i know his toilet habits perfectly now so at least if anything goes wrong there i will know straight away :) and thanks everyone else for all the advice i shall have fun trying him on the recipes and i will be adding some vitamins and cod liver oil to his chicken and rice mix too xxxxx
