taxi or tube?

My 3 friends and I are going to london tomorrow (for one night). We get off at kings cross.......the hotel is at Russell square.....the theatre is the London Palladium. The travel agent said these were all fairly close to each other. We aren't sure if we should just get taxis or tubes?

If there are three of you, get a cab and split the fare - easier and quicker, and probably cheaper, if not, very little in it.

Kings Cross to Russell Square is walking distance - 1 stop on the tube. Nearest tube to the palladium is Oxford Circus, again a short tube trip (bit too far to walk maybe). Taxi's cost a fortune in London and most of the time you'll be stuck in traffic when the meter just keeps rolling over. Go to www.tfl.gov.uk to plan your journey.

Tube. Russell Square tube to King's Cross on the only line viz.the Piccadilly Line, one stop, and change there to the Victoria Line, to Oxford Circus. The Palladium is a very short walk. Journey time for the lot is about 20 minutes, including change and walk.

single journey in london is £4 I believe but you can get one day travelcards that give you the freedom to do a bit of sighseeing before the show. Go to the Tfl (transport for london - www.tfl.gov.uk) web site for more in depth details.

You buy one day travelcards at any tube station ticket machine. To safeguard innocent travellers, the machines also issue travelcards automatically if you try to get a return ticket in off peak hours of travel. Don't know how familiar you are with it, so I 'll add that travelling Russell Square to Oxford Circus doesn't require two tickets; going up to buy another one at King's Cross is not required; even though you change lines at King's Cross (just as well, because the queues at King's Cross, both for the machines and the ticket windows there, are horrendous at most times!). You simply go from one line to the other. The ticket issued will be valid for any journey in the central zone. The travelcard you'll need is likewise one which is valid for a day's journeys in that zone, more than big enough for normal sightseeing.

Russell Square to London Palladium is probably only a mile if not under, walk and enjoy London, Oxford St is teeming with shops.

take bus no 7 from stop e at russell square, and get off at the great titchfield street stop on oxford street - just 2mn walk from the palladium.

thanks guys! I'll discuss it with my buddies on our way to London tommorow! Think we.ll be travelling between zone 1 and 2 so I think it costs £8.50. Do you need cash for these machines or can you pay by card?

You can use a card in most, if not all machines (can't say I've noticed one that doesn't take cards), but cash is less of a faff. The machines take notes, not just coins.
