Bought some stuff from Neal's Yard today on their recommendation (for thing 1 - bloody nits again and she has a reaction to the chemical stuff). It stank, it wa so bad I had to sit her under an open window - did I have an 'off' bottle or is this usual? (The store assistant did say it smelt a 'bit'.)

The best solution to nits we found was the comb and conditioner. We never went down the chemical route and after several infections I bit the bullet and bought a Nitty Gritty comb. At around £10, they are not cheap, but it did do the trick as it is supposed to get the eggs as well.
We used to do the girls every other day for about a week, then weekly for a couple more weeks. The girls didn't like the routine much, but they disliked the nits even more so put up with it (not that we gave them much choice).

It's been a right pain in the bum - both girls (one of whom has hair down to her bum) have been plagued with them since Christmas. I have had them loads too. I check them with a nit comb and conditioner every other day but we are all getting fed up with it. I'm sure I am being as thorough as I can be, just can't get them clear of them (I check the boys too and himself checks his).
I was told that before any of this chemical nit killing stuff came out, people used to wash there hair in paraffin and even bath in the stuff to get rid of pubic lice.. but one of the best things to use is vodka, buy a large bottle use about a quarter of it to wet the hair, then pour out a glass of it for you to drink.. after about 30 mins repeat this and whatever is left in the bottle finish whilst allowing the hair to dry out.. Check for nits.. if there still there repeat the next day.. then the next.. etc
