Mr S and I share our computer and this morning when he tried logging into his setting it came up with some blurb about the computer being locked and a message from the Met saying he had downloaded an illegal music file .Then a bit saying he would have to pay X amount of money ,threatening message etc Needless to say he didn't pay anything and just switched off .
He's never downloaded any music .In fact he wouldn't know how to .It's not happening on my setting .I presume it's a scam but don't know how to go about getting rid .Would be grateful for advice .

It appears you may have the Ukash virus.

Do you have anti malware on your PC if so run it
What O/S are you using?

Assuming windows start your pc and log in as Administrator. Download Malwarebytes free from here and install it, then run a full scan. If that doesn't find it then come back here.

I've just Googled that Dave. Seems like a headache :)
My son is the administrator for this machine and I have no idea if there's any sort malware or similar installed on here. He donated the machine to us old fogies when he moved out and we not very techno savvy so I'll have to ask him to come over and have a look.
Thanks very much for your help .At least it's put my mind at rest .

Thank you too SlackAlice .Obviously I'll have to wait for my adminstrator :)
I'm sure he'll be able to sort it out . I can show him this and he can go from there .
Either of you could already be Adminstrators, if you go to Control Panel/ User Accounts, it should tell you there.

How do you log in as Administrator ?

I've had a look at that SlackAlice and under my name it says ..Limited account .
Mr S nowhere to be seen ..lol
Rather than mess about and totally mess it up I'll wait for the head honcho .
Many thanks once again .
WR
My mistake meant to say 'Switch User', mind you any administrator worth his salt would have 'set' a password on it. Apologies.

shaneystar2
Yup, you will have to wait ☺.
goodness, where do you get an administrator worth his salt?

It'll be worth a roast dinner Jno no doubt :))
my administrator, who appears to be someone called J, hasn't set any passwords. Perhaps I should hire a better one, seeing it's just me using the computer.
One way to find out how limited you are. Download Malwarebytes or Superantispyware, from the creators' site, and try to install. You never know, you may be allowed. And if you aren't then you've lost nothing.

No expert but you may be able to right click on the file and 'run as administrator' anyway.

Meanwhile you surely must have some kind of anti-virus software already installed. Get it to scan all your drives, and follow it's suggestions if it finds anything.

Thanks OG.. but my child is now coming over tomorrow and I would rather leave it to him.
I'm loathe to attempt messing about off my own bat with something I know zilch about .
Knowing my luck the whole thing would go bazooms up and it would be a .... "raised eyebrows ,huge sighs and now what have you messed up Mum scenario " .. plus lots of muttering and grumbling . I'm sure he'll be able sort it out .
Thanks everyone for your help ..goodnight x
OK. But get him to show you how easy an installation is as he goes ;-)
