My son has had a cuddly toy,a donkey, which has been his favourite from the age of 6 months and was very very attached to it in his earlier years.
He is now 6yrs old and a little bit more relaxed about donkey but still likes to have him around at bedtime especially.
I mentioned about maybe putting donkey away now he's getting a bigger boy but he didn't like that idea...and i think i worried him as he'd hid donkey away himself for a day or two.
what is the best time for these things or should i just leave it to him?
I remember my mum battling with my brother when he was about 7 or 8 over a similar thing which i don't fancy repeating.

Why make him give it up. He will have given it up before he gets married so leave him alone.
Why on earth does it matter ? Absolutely leave it to him - if he takes it with him on honeymoon - you may be a little concerned but by then It will be none of your business !!
Agree with the others, let him keep it. My eight year son has a bear that he sleeps with, it doesn't get mentioned and he doesn't take it if we go away but he still holds it to go to sleep.
My son used to suck his thumb, and you couldn't take that away. Some of his teachers at school used to nag him about it but I never minded - I just said "well you wont be sucking your thumb when you get married !". When I told my girlfriend this - she said she still sucked her thumb to get off to sleep (and she was married with two children !!)
I have an 11 year old and 10 year old. The younger boy is drowning in a sea of stuffed cats/penguins etc and the elder one still has a couple of stuffed things about - I cleared virtually everything from his room when we were getting some work done and he hasn't asked for it back so I guess that was his decision made - he knows it's in the loft and can have it if he wants. Younger boy asked as soon as his room was sorted and got all his things back (well, most ;o) - i think there is a another bag that he hasn't mentioned!) 6 is still very young.
Do not on any account remove donkey. Let him decide. It is his donkey.
i've still got humphrey, had him since i was born

i don;t need him to sleep on the bed with me anymore tho...
My son buried his face in a large soft toy snowman at night, until his early to mid teens.

He eventually just stopped.

Leave him to it, it's doing no harm at all.
im with mamya SAVE THE DONKEY.
My son had a blankie that he would fold neatly and place on his head when he went to sleep.

Ah relax everyone. Donkey is safe and well and going nowhere.
Very funny Mamya. That actually looks a bit our donkey.how did you know?...:O)
What prompted me to ask is when my son's friends and my niece have been over they have all met donkey as he is always around and when i ask what they're favourite toy is called they all said they didn't have one and it made it seem a bit babyish that my Mattie had one.
But thanks to your replies he's had a reprieve and I'll leave it up to matthew.

And to earlier replies from Joko and Daisy that is awful. Parents can be very mean. My boyfriend had the same with his parents Joko. They were very very comfortable with money for quite a few years but he was never given all that much but he cherished what he had and then when they fell on hard times due to his father's bad habits he used to come home to find his things missing from his room such as his little telly and stereo as they had been taken and sold at a car boot sale.
I am 51 and have many of my soft toys, its a great thing to keep them and then talk to your children/grandchildren about them. Donkey can be put on a shelf etc when he wants him to. My husband also has his original teddy, my daughter has him now. Childhood is a special time, let him enjoy.
Leave it with him but restrict it to when he is in bed. He will grow out of it eventually. Mine did in their own time. Why create a battle when it's not really a problem?!
He will decide when he's ready to give it up, don't push him, it wont work, and its doing no harm good luck.x
