As far as I can recall I have only bought a low fat spread once, when I had a very difficult visitor.
I buy Yeo Valley organic butter.
I never butter bread for sandwiches and rarely have toast so butter is for cooking and none of the plastic spreads are an adequate substitute for butter.
Tilly2: I have used Benecol spread and taken a Benecol drink every day for just over a year as in March 2011 my fasting cholesterol level was 6.3.
Was re-tested in May 2012 and guess what the level was then? Yes, 6.3.
So I have abandoned the expensive Benecol products................
If anyone can tell me of 'spread' that really does taste like butter, PLEASE let me know. I have tried them all and none comes even close. I think 'clover' is the least bad .
I use the Olive spread from Aldi, but to be honest I scrape on and scrape off when making sandwiches so its hardly worth using at all!
Has to be proper butter when cooking.
I used to buy flora light but I've gone off the taste so I now buy Lurpak Lighter and Lurpak Lightest. I tried making a white sauce with the Lightest one and it turned out horrible. I always make it with Lurpak Lighter now and it turns out perfect every time.
Jumbo, thanks for the information about Benecol. The spread and the drinks cost a fortune. I'll tell my husband to just take his statins and I'll buy a cheaper alternative. He doesn't actually like the taste of butter.
