Samsung Galaxy answerphone

I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830. I cannot seem to access my answerphone messages; I get the usual 'to listen to your messages, press 1' menu, but the screen immediately goes dark and there doesn't appear to be a way to show the keypad. Any help would be appreciated; I have a message waiting and it may be important.
