i fully expect him to be found guilty....and he is a waaaaay bit beyond counselling or other low grade psychiatric interventions. anybody who does something like that could not be in their right mind. and two wrongs never make a right - i am sure loads of people would want him strung up and disappeared from this planet. but....i have worked with mentally disordered offenders for years. some do not give a Sugar about what they do, carry on destructive behaviours and do not engage with anything that is offered to them at all. but others do recover after a long period of time and are utterly disgusted, ashamed, suicidal and unable to reconcile what they have done when they are extremely unwell. we should consider our humanity in how we deal with people when things like this happen. should we try to treat people who are mentally disordered; have learning disabilities; or other problems which have made them commit heinous crimes (and not release them - obviously) and try to understand how society produces people like this. or shall we just execute everybody that does not fit into our extremely wonderfully fluffed up society because it is easier? they are people, like you and me (however hard that may be to reconcile against the crime that has been committed) and have rights and a place in society - even if it is prison for the rest of their lives. would you be prepared to push the button or inject them/dispatch them in a manner you see fit....or would you expect somebody else to do it? capital punishment is more than a way to deal with offenders. it is a reflection of the society within which it takes place.....and i do think people need to think more deeply about the issue of capital punishment before advocating it while the true facts of what happened are known. think about places like china, afghanistan and anywhere else that like is taken so freely....and injustly.
