Depneds where you are going. I went to see Rangers in Poland a lot of years ago and had to get a new one as there was less than six months left on it.
Probably depends where you want to go, but should be OK for most places.
If you want to, you can renew it before it expires and they add on the extra time...so you would get a new passport that expired in June 2023.
A maximum of 9 months unexpired time may be carried over to a renewed passport, so the earliest you can renew to retain the June 2023 expiration date is September 2012.
A passport is valid throughout the whole of the EU right up until its nominal expiry date. (It's EU law. All member states MUST admit you, even if there are only a few minutes left on the passport). So, as long as you're travelling within the EU you'll have no problems.

A FEW other countries (among those popular as tourist destinations with UK travellers) impose a minimum period of validity of passports. You can check n the requirements of any particular non-EU country here:

the price is coming down this year, so don't rush
Indeed, as of 3rd September 2012 the standard adult passport fee will be reduced from £77.50 to £72.50
