Does anybody know if any of the high street stores (Asda, Woolworths, Argos, HMV etc) are still looking for temps for the xmas period?

depends where you live. in london the big stores are still recruiting.

They tend to have a fairly high turnover - if you're having problems, get in touch with either the shop direct or an employment agency who will be able to find you a vacency pretty much pronto. Don't forget - they're getting paid by the company who will hire you so they will do their utmost to get you work.

my son has been looking since the start of November and everywhere are saying that they have already got their xmas temp staff. We live on the outskirts of London. He doesn't want to travel into central London. He has tried Argos, Woolies, Sainsburys, PC World, ELC, Game and Computer Exchange (plus I think a few more, can't remember off the top of my head)

The only advice I can give is to contact the local job centre. They will have a list or at least should have. Or he could try making contact directly with the shops, by phoning customer services. You may have missed the boat for this year tho. But good luck any way
