She has released a statement saying she is pulling out of the Olympics through injury.

She has been trying to overcome an ankle injury but imho she's left it a bit late, these young athletes have to be 100% fit - not maybe fit - well before the events. She's selfish for not giving way for someone else. Actually I agree with jaberwocky, that put me right off the 'lady'.

Agree with ladybirder. Paula had recorded the fastest time of any British female in the past year, so had every right to be selected. The Olympic marathon last time was won by a lady, Dita, who was much the same age as Paula is now, and not considered a favourite for the event by any means.Freya Murray has now been given the opportunity to represent GB, and hopefully will do us proud.
Paula has often already supported younger athletes, and you only have to listen to someone like Mo Farah to appreciate that this included both advice and financial help.
I wish her all the best in anything she chooses to do.

Why do these Peter Pan athletes like Beckham and Radcliffe try to continue to hog the limelight when well past their prime ?

Retire, and give the youngsters a go.
