I've finally had to admit, as I plummet towards my 50th birthday, that I need double glazing for my peepers (glasses). Can any of you, soon to be, fellow bespectacled ABers recommed the best place to have an eye test done?

The first person to write 'should have gone to specsavers' is a big ninny.

I think you pays your money and takes your choice zac, though as a lifelong four-eyes, I agree entirely with daffy and boxy. On eye tests, I've never had the same level of service and quality from the chains as from an independent local - and properly qualified - opthalmologist.

Don't be fooled by the chain deals either. My current opticians always does a second pair half-price (imo you do need two and pairs on the go for both wear and tear and "where's my specs" moments) and they also have a great range of unbranded under twenty quid frames which I use for just for a change pairs. They've never charged me for running repairs either.

For frames, remember they're little machines for your face, so check how robust the hinges and nose pieces are, and invest a fiver in the little screwdriver and screw kits most opticians sell for keeping arms, frames and lenses attached.

And welcome to the Joy of Spex...
Have flitted and flirted my way round most of them in my time (40 years of specs wearing) but keep coming back to Dolland and H -now Boots ,they have the best service and range. I quite agree with you Zacs if I have to wear them then they HAVE to be designer - currnetly wearing Giveniche (sorry spelling),but have had Dior (Best by far),Prada etc.

Thanks yet again. I might try to find a modern independant.
I used to go to Specsavers but go to an independent now .Really thorough eye test .In fact we went just over a week ago . I always felt Specsavers gave you the hard sell and wanted you in and out asap .This may not apply to them all of course but our one is awful compared to the previous one we used when we lived in a different area .
We don't have to pay for the test as we are old fogies but it came to just under 600 quid for the two of us .Mr S had bifocals and reading glasses and of course mine were the expensive ones ..lol ..but I have thinned down varifocals ( very shortsighted so would look like Joe Ninety otherwise ) with all the coatings etc and of course fashion statement frames and I got a pair of sunglasses free.
I go to D & A - have done for years and they've been really good - at the beginning of the year I decided to try contact lenses and they are fabulous - why on earth didn't I try them earlier? ..... had a bit of a fiddle to get used to them but now absolutely love them...... am nearer 70 than 60 btw so you are never too old to try something new.
