a headset with microphone that plugs into a corded telelphone?
I have arthritis in my hands and it can get quite painful holding the handset.
I bought a hands free phone but the person at the other end can't hear me very well so I wondered if I could unplug the handset and plug in a headset that has a microphone attached.

There are lots of headsets around if you search online -

what you will probably need is a telephone with a headset socket.

that way you have the option of using the headset or handset.

eg BT Converse £20-odd

Can you not contact social services. They should be able to put you in touch with all the aids necessary.
A wireless headset would be ideal. Look on Amazon for "Wireless headest for telephone"

A bit more expensive than the plug in ones, but saves you sitting on the stairs!
You would need the handset in for the phone to ring loud...

Then im almost sure you can switch to a headset- i used ti use a headset at old work xx
Look at this on eBay:

BT Converse 2100 Corded Telephone Black - with RJ11 Headset port
