Hi all! Have completed the puzzle, but can't quite understand 5d. I'm sure the answer is RATEL, but where does the EL come from? Is there an American railway named Eastern Line? Thanks in advance for any help.

What an absurd clue for "EL"
The Erie Lackawanna Railway (reporting mark EL), known as the Erie–Lackawanna Railroad until 1968, was formed from the 1960 merger of the Erie Railroad and the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. The official motto of the line was "The Friendly Service Route". At the end of 1960 E-L had 3189 route-miles, 7265 track-miles; on 31 Dec 1970 mileages were 2982 and 6370. In 1970 it reported 15039 million ton-miles of revenue freight and 329 million passenger-miles.
