8mm is the overall term for 3 different formats.

Video8
Hi8
Digital8

Video8 was the first one, Hi8 was an improved quality version and Digital8 was a digital version.

Video8 players can only play Video8 tapes
Hi8 players can play Video8 and Hi8 tapes
Some Digital8 players can play all 3 formats (but not all players)
