I've made about half a dozen attempts to create a Gmail account, filling in the required information and clicking 'next'. Every time it take me back to a previous application page with some of my details already filled in but gives no indication why this happens - so I try again and again. It looks simple enough but is confoundedly awkward. Has anyone else had this experience and can perhaps explain the problem?

You've probably missed out a field. A common problem is failing to check a checkbox. Scroll carefully down the page and look for errors.
Also, if you get the Captcha wrong, it will take you back, removing some of the data you've entered (such as the password).

Thanks for your thoughts about this. It seems I hadn't noticed the difference between Captcha capital and lower case letters. Google has created an account for me but now, when I open my home page, I see my name with 'Share' and a place for a photograph at the top right corner of the screen. It looks as though I've joined some sort of chat blog, which is not what I wanted. All I was looking for was a new email address. I'm now searching for a way to cancel this wretched new account, or perhaps even change my default opening page. Ideas appreciated!
I use Gmail and it's excellent. Since I have tens of thousands of emails stored there, what you're describing only occupies a very small part of my screen. It's definitely worth perservering. Just ignore that area for now.
All the extras are optional - once you've answered a few questions and ensured that none of your profile is visible, it's just a bog standard e-mail account.

Thank you Ellipsis and Rojash. I'll spend a bit more time getting down to understanding it - but maybe not today!
