ipod to hifi

I have a load of music on my computer which I would like to play through my hi-fi. I gather that you can get 60gb ipods which would hold the music but how do you get that music through a hi fi?

We have a lead that plugs into iPod headphone outlet and then into inputs at rear of hifi amplifier. I suppose you could do that from your PC headphone socket as well and not need iPod?

Failing that fit iPod with device that transmits at FM frequency and tune stereo receiver into that frequency.

There are wireless devices that transmit music from your PC to your HiFi. Try Google or one of the Computing or HiFi magazines or their websites.

It's most likely that your hifi has an Aux or Video input, in the from of RCA (or 'phono') sockets on the back - one red, one white or black. They'll look like this.

If your hifi is a seperates arrangement, literally with seperate cd player, tuner, tape deck and amp - rather than a combined unit - then it's likely there will be a few of these spare inputs to choose from. You could use something like Tape 2, CD, or anything you've haven't got connected - except the "Phono" connection - this is for record decks, it works slightly differently.

To attach your iPod you'll need what's technically called a "Stereo 3.5mm jack to twin RCA" - or, in slightly less technical terms, a "headphone jack to phono" cable.

This would look like this.

As the use for these cables is quite common, you should be able to get one from most high-street electronics or hifi shops - Dixons, Currys etc will most likely stock them, even the larger Asdas and Tescos. Here I'd expect to pay around �4 - �6, you don't need a fancy gold plated one.
Otherwise, if you try Maplin / Farnell, you'll be able to pick one up for one or two pounds.

All you need to do then is plug both ends in, set your hifi to Video, Aux, or whatever (depending on what the sockets are named on the back of your hifi unit), and run the volume on your iPod at around 80%.

I got an iTrip which is an fm transmitter. really easy to use but illegal here in the uk cos of some radio rights acts but you can buy off the internet.
