cast iron stoves

Hi, hope someone can help, has anybody had experience of fitting a cast iron stove? i am considering fitting one in an open fireplace, how easy is it to fit and what else do need ,ie piping up th chimney. many thanks for any help.

You can do it yourself but will need to get it signed of by building regs. You need a register plate, stove pipe and a joint (depending upon if the pipe is coming out of the top of your stove or out the back). You may need to line your chimney (depending on age and state of it) and you will need a chimney cowl. You also have to have so much (can't remember how much) hearth at the front of the stove (to stop embers, etc setting fire to your flooring). You also need to make sure there is sufficient space around the stove in fireplace.

Officially, just as Gas can only be handled by a Gas Safe guy, these should be installed by a HETAS guy.
It depends on any particular building inspector. If he reckons you're competent, he'll let you fit it with his inspection.
If you're not confident, then ask the stove supplier for local installer recommendations.
