Having seen Jenna's link, one must look closely at the article. Firstly, the firework trade does not use the words "Industrial firework" or the phrase "Onion bomb". The item in question was most probably a firework display shell which is a category 4 firework and only for professional use. We must ask how these children got hold of it. The only two ways that I can see is that they either stole it or were sold it by an unlicensed person who imported it or stole it themselves.
Having said that, I hope that the children involved make speedy recoveries and I wish them well.

should they only be sold to a licened group????
Yes and yes. I have seen and heard far too many frightened animals and children, and also seen a horrific accident with a firework in a child's trouser pocket.
What if someone sent a long range rocket into an oil refinery?

What would happen then, I wonder?

I, too, believe that fireworks should only be sold to groups of people!
I prefer them to only be part of a public display, which can also go wrong but more rarely than individual accidents which can be disasterous for the victim. Also there is so much random firing of fireworks in area where I live which is probably diwali as well as guy fawkes and they usually start up after midnight which is not much fun if you are trying to sleep.
Thought they were illegal after 23:00.
Organised displays only so that experienced peeps can have control.

Modern FW are now like bombs & I dont like them landing in my space half lit.
baldric, they are
TWR, I think you might be thinking of licenCed!
The law states that it is not permissible to let off fireworks after 11pm at night up until 7am the next day except for on certain days. These days are 5th November, when fireworks are permitted until midnight, Chinese New Year, Diwali and New Years Eve when fireworks are permitted until 1am the next day. The penalties for this offence are imprisonment (maximum 6 months) and a substantial fine.
So we have one day a year until midnight.
Diwali celebrants days are not defined and they have till 1 am.
Why am I not surprised!
Personally I would ban them because they terrify my dogs but I recognise that I can't have everything my own way. I would like to limit their use to organised events and further limit the noise level allowed especially as this year a local Round Table has advertised a "return to a traditional and noisy display" If they remain sold to the general public, I would also like to limit their use to the same date ranges as they are allowed to be sold.
The problem with fireworks is enforcing the law. There were still fireworks going off after 11pm last night and last year we had a spate of someone letting off a singe large firework (and they were large, parts of the casing fell in my front and back gardens) late at night on several occasions during December.
Children can be injured by even the "safe" fireworks. A niece of mine years ago had her tights melted to her leg by sparks from a hand held firework falling inside her wellington boot. She still has the scar.
managed.

the comment on the oil refinery is nuts and "inflammatory" - most of the products are in enclosed (roofed) tanks or production vessels. The only one that is sometimes exposed and that is very difficult to ignite. In fact ships have to have well-heated boilers (from marine diesel) before fuel oil can be burnt.
Hi DT
Did you get my post re Birdlip on this post
http://www.theanswerb.../Question1185283.html
Yes - saw that - did you have a good time in the area, Ann?
I was only asking in case some foolish person did this for a dare.

I now realise that said rocket would be out when it hit the ground as it would have run out of fuel by then as it would be on the way down.

Aren't I entitled to ask a silly question now and then?
