Secondly if he were 'struck off' I would think he could perform surgery on his own animal or someones animal to save its life -who would prosecute in this instance? Farmers regularly perform minor surgery on animals (castration) without licence. Is this Hypothetical?
yes...he can provide first aid , but not things like surgery, or any medical interventions for pets (e.g. vaccinations). it's the same as a doctor being struck off. they can act like any other member of the public would, but obviously he would have much more knowledge to apply to an emergency situation. but....that doesn't mean he can carry on in his own sweet, merry way and treat pets: he'll be hauled before a court and done for something (but i don't know what!).
I think this maybe connected to the Emmerdale storyline at the moment, for those of you who don't watch, this is the story so far: The vet had a fight with someone and accidently struck a Police Officer whilst fighting, he has been suspended by the RCVS, but in tonight's episode, his friend's dog was run over, there was no other vet available and the dog wouldn't have survived a journey to another vet, so the vet in question operated on the dog. I was talking about this earlier to my daughter and said that given the circumstances, and the fact that vets should always put the animal's welfare first, I think or would hope that the RCVS would take a lenient view if they found out about it.
That's not the point jules. Afaik anybody can operate on a pet providing they do not cause the animal undue pain, so if you know what your doing you could do it on your own or neighbour's pet. You don't need to be a qualified vet.
It is illegal for an unqualified person to operate on a human but not on an animal.
