Does anyone know if Advent laptops are ok

I am looking to buy a laptop for my daughter, the purple advent monza T100 looks really nice and although hasn't got the best battery life 2.5 hrs it's not a problem as will 99% be used within the home.
I just wondered if anyone has got/had an advent and how good they are?

My laptop is an Advent. I have had it 3 years and has done an awful lot of work. I agree the battery is poor but I use mains all the time. It is advisable to use the battery now and then so it charges it but remove when using mains. I did encounter a problem earlier this year, the fan overheated and caused damage to the hard drive requiring a new fan and new hard drive which as I had an insurance policy through PC World it was all done foc. I have since cancelled the policy so if it goes wrong again it will be time for a new laptop. Have been very satisfied with it on the whole.

Advent are only sold through Currys / PC World (who are the same company anyway).

It is always risky buying any product that is sold through only one outlet as you have no idea what the quality is like as it does not compete on the "open market".

Many of these types of laptops are made in "generic" factores in the far east and just "badged" by the outlet who buy them. You may find the same laptop sold in say Germany with a totally different name badge on it.

I think you are far better buying a "branded" laptop from a compnay who sell in many shops and in many countries.

"Name" brands like Samsung, Toshiba, Lenovo, Sony, HP, Asus, Dell etc do have to keep their quality up or they will soon get a reputation of being a poor quality brand.

I am not saying buying an Advent would be a mistake, but as it is only sold through on type of shop you have no idea how good the laptop really is or what the quality is like.

Note that the Advent Monza also has a Celeron processor and these are amongst the "low end" slowest CPUs you can get in a laptop.

This CPU is designed more to save battery life than to do any fast work.

There is always a trade off between CPU power and battery life. The more powerful the CPU the more it uses up the battery. Many CPUs have now been designed to save battery life, but to do that they have to reduce the power of the CPU.

It is a bit like putting a very low powered engine in a car to save petrol, but the engine may be so low powered it can hardly move the car very fast.

Try to get one that says "Pentium" or maybe "core i3" as they are faster and better.

Just to add to what VHG says. Because Advent is simply a brand name for Curries/PC World, it's quite possible that two different Advent models could be designed and manufactured by two entirely different companies, so the fact that one model give good service is not an indication that other models will do the same.

Thank you all for your replies, def food for thought and I was really looking to get a name I knew, I am a lover of samsung and it was really the colour of the advent and it seemed good value for money with the gb and windows 8
