not all shops give VAT receipts, so what can you do?
does a receipt HAVE to be a VAT one in order to claim it?

"If you are a retailer, you do not need to issue a VAT invoice or receipt unless your customer asks for one."
But for sales under £250 a simple VAT receipt is all that's required, which only has to include
the seller's name and address
the seller's VAT registration number
the time of supply (tax point)
a description of the goods or services
And no, you can't claim VAT back without a VAT receipt.
