Apparently a bowl of porridge eaten first thing in the morning will keep you alert because it's a good source of complex carbs which the body synthesises to sugars throughout the morning.
That should keep you alert and awake.
Not tried it myself - I don't eat porridge since Ready Brek stopped making the banana flavoured version back in the late 70s.
I have this problem, have to get up at 5:40 and its a killer in the winter as I only tend to wake up with light!
I often have progidge, but dont find it wake me up - keeps me going until lunch though. I have found Doughy Egberts (spelling) the best instant coffee, doesnt tend to be bitter untill really strong. Many of the fair trade coffee are very good, look for a 5 in strength. (I dont have time for fresh on a morning). Adding milk first thing will help it down. I drink black (fresh) most of the day, but first thing I need something a little more gentle.
If you are not a regular coffee/tea drinker don't go mad on the coffee, too much can make you feel pritty ill if your not used to it and pile in for a double espresso!
My wife doesn't drink coffee much and a cappachino (not very strong coffee) will wake her up as much as an espresso (strong) will for me.
If you don't like bitter coffee but still want the coffee taste, I can recommend Kenco Decaffinated which is quite mild. A lot of people can find coffee upsets their stomach but it's more gentle if you add a little warm milk to the cup first and then mix in the granules before adding the water. Maxwell House is very harsh and definitely to be avoided if you dislike bitter coffee.
But probably you need to consider other factors for your morning tiredness such as adequate sleep in a room with fresh air, staying well hydrated, proper diet with lots of protein and vitamins and no junk food and gentle exercise. If only we all observed the advice we offer to others !!
