my dad always taught me to spray my car engine plugs etc with wd40 in the winter to keep it waterproof, ive just got new car T reg is it wise to do this to the new car? it runs fine and had been regulary serviced.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I think your dad was probably referring to some of the older cars, particularly Fords which used to hate the damp. My old 1977 Fiesta wouldn't start without a squirt of the magic wd40.
But technology has advanced. Engines have improved and plugs, plug leads, electronics etc are more than capable of surviving the damp Brittish winters.....providing your car is looked after.
Having said that, you will do no harm giving everything a weekly or monthly squirt and i always carry a can of WD with me in the car.
WD40 is a magic lubricant and water repellant but if your car doesn't need regular spraying don't use it unnecessarily.
WD40 will dry to a slight residue which over the months will build up and can crack like a lacquer. In addition the engine compartment is not a clean area and you may even add to the damp starting problems.
