Day Out Ideas
Boy #2 is 9 soon and instead of a party (which he is not very enthusiastic about) he has been offered the option of a present and a day out (or a big present). We are currently looking at Legoland (when it opens in March) but want to give him some other options. We are prepared for up to a 2 1/2 journey (one way) and have a budget of up to £200 (for two adults and five children - ages 12, 9, 7 and two 5 year olds). I have looked at the Snowdome in Telford but the little one can't do everything and some of the adult-to-child ratios won't work for us. Anyone got any ideas (he is prepared for a wait until places open for the new season) - we have done most of the obvious ones. Please don't suggest Wookey Hole ;( Thank you.

I can only vouch for Hendon as I've been there a couple of times - it's excellent. Assuming you live in the Midlands that might be a bit too far but there is another in Cosford (Salop). Both are free entry btw.

My suggestion is slightly over your 2.5 hour journey limit but it might still be worth considering:
If you catch the 0710 train from Hereford (on Saturday 19 January, 6 days after your son's birthday) you can be in London at 1029 (or the 0617 train gets you there at 0929). The 1821 train back gets you to Hereford at 2135. Those are direct services, with no changes. The total return fare, for 2 adults and 5 children, is £105 including unlimited travel on London Underground and bus services.
That would let you explore the wonderful Science Museum, especially 'LaunchPad' (which is packed with things to do and buttons to press) and pay a visit to the moving dinosaur at the Natural History Museum next door. Both museums are free but your budget would also allow you to pay for the few charged exhibits (such as the IMAX cinema at the Science Museum). With careful planning you could also squeeze in a bit of sightseeing.
(I've just checked: You could also use the same services, at the same fare, on the day before your son's birthday but Sunday services don't run early enough for a trip on the big day itself).

Thanks for the detailed response Buenchico, will add it to the suggestions (personally hate London with a passion and three of them have been to the attractions you have listed although it was a while ago). Teeny weeny bit odd that you know the boy's actual birthday though (his own dad would be pushed to remember the exact date).
