actually I know a very respectable middle aged man who is a huge trek fan and has one of these.
a few strings and that would make quite a stylish guitar.
the one that I have seen (and held) was razor sharp, very heavy but beautifully balanced. The person who has it is very careful about where it is kept.
But that's what they would say if they really had a secret Death Star, wouldn't they?
thanks woofgang
This is going off topic a bit, I know, but reading the comments about bat'leths made me wonder why they were never developed as a real world weapon? Would they be considered inferior to a 1 handed or 2 handed sword or polearm?

I do know that martial artists have developed their own martial art based around using the bat'leth, since it was popularised in Star Trek.... :)
there are loads of sharp edges on the bits that would be whistling around your own head and ears in real combat. I think it would also be difficult to keep the sharp edges facing your opponent. The whole thing is heavy and would tend IMO to slip around in your hands turning the bladed edges downwards. the ratio of non useful metal weight to useful cutting edge is a bit high....maybe of much of the metal was cut away to holes to lighten the balance? Actually IIRC, cos its a while since I have seen the one owned by the bloke I know, his has a more holey structure which might be why it felt well balanced.
just looked at the pic again, yup I am sure that the one that I have seen had less metal and more holes, also the points on his are functional and not rounded.
American Death Star in Friendly Fire Tragedy.
Pentagon regrets 6 billion incidents of collateral damage.

In happier news, Fluffy the three-legged kitten survived.
though it had four legs before the batleth hit.
