Daughter and I were just watching a clip of the Lance Armstrong interview, Oprah was asking him what drugs he used, included in the list was blood transfusion.

We are wondering how a blood transfusion enhances ability, or is it to cover up drug use?

Many thanks for any replies.

Wow, who knew? I didn't realise this went on, and as far back as the 70's.

Thanks for the link jd, best answer for you. ;)
The link to the USADA Reasoned Decision is in this thread, it may prove of some use to you as it details the full extent of the doping by LA and others.

Thanks for that CD, I have a read of that later, all 202 page ;)
The general idea is to increase the number of red blood cells in your system - these carry the oxygen about the body, so more red blood cells, the more oxygen that can be got to the lungs - which in turn powers the rest of the show.

It's also why athletes train in high altitudes, as this stimulates the body into producing more white blood cells (because of the lack of oxygen - "thinner" air at great heights).

Must be a typo as surely you mean "red cells."
It does make fascinating reading RR and is literally a page turner!
