if you heat sugar enough to melt it, it goes to a clear syrup and when it sets again its like a clear fruit drop with no flavouring...you can try it at home.
But, if you damp the sugar very slightly with a little water vapour then press it into a small non water proof container, put a weight on it and leave it voila!....or leave a packet of sugar in a damp place and make the world's largest sugar cube lol
