What or who makes an artist collectable?

I don't mean the artists like: Elvis or the Beatles ect, but a one off album on vinyl or C/D. I sell on ebay and I love to watch a bidding war happen over a C/D that I have owned but don't listen to anymore or I have picked up from boot sales, friends ect.. for example Zazu by Rosie Vela and Boing by Airhead.

I was a collector and part time dealer of rare records a few years back when I could buy many of the records that sell on e-bay for �100s for just a few pounds each.

Many of the rarest that are sold nowadays are not neccesarily by the big names but records by very obscure artists. When an artist starts out any recordings are usually made by small independent labels in very small runs. Lots of the collectable LPs of the 70's were only produced in amounts of 99. Maybe someone else can explain this figure!

The majority were pretty poor and deservedly sunk without a trace, but a few, despite poor sales were actually quite good. Over time these little "gems" have been re-discovered and brought to the attention of the record collecting public. This is where the crazy prices come in. There may be only a dozen or so copies in good condition still in existance and maybe a couple of hundred collectors wanting to get hold of a copy.

Thank you for answering Richard. I didn't think anyone would and it is a subject that has interested me since I started selling and buying on eBay 3yrs ago. There have been other instances that slip my memory now "Boing" being the first and obviously the most memorable. "Zazu" (C/D) the most recent. Thanks again.
