Can you freeze Cava?

My dad has asked can you freeze Cava? He has half a bottle that has been left unused & wonders if he can freeze it and if so, how?

Tell your dad not to be so tight, it's hardly the most expensive of wines is it??!! if he must freeze it then use an ice cube tray and freeze it that but when it defrosts all the flavour and fizz of cava will be lost. oh thank your dad for me, he has given me my best laugh so far of the new year (apart from that squirrel thing)!
If you freeze leftover wine in ice cube trays then it can be used in a casserole one day to add a bit of luxury where you might not have.
How do you end up with cava left over? Does not compute...........

Cerva's a town in Portugal, isn't it? Cerveza is Spanish for beer, but the sparkling white Catalonian wine is definitely cava.
I agree with all the answers above (apart from the cerva one). I'm baffled and no i dont have an answer.
realised why i thought it was cerva - seen a bottle with cerva written in large letter on a label around the neck and just assumed that it was how you spell cava - didn't give it a lot of thought. i guess it was just the region the wine came from.

Cava means cellar. It is is the legal term for sparkling wine made in Spain by the Champagne methode. It was adopted after the Spanish were forbidden to call their fizz 'Champagne'.


While the methode Champenois is used to make the wine, the Spanish use different grapes in the blend and I for one appreciate and enjoy Cava for what it is.



As others have said -- I fin dit hard to imagine having leftovers. And if you do just put it upright inthefridge and it will still have fizz the next day.

Didn't they ban the use of 'Methode Champagnoise' aswell for any traditionally made sparkling wine other than that from the Champagne region, Pinotage ?

You're correct, brachiopod; "methode champenoise" can be used legally only to describe champagne. Even the New World fizzes made by such as Mumm can be described only as "methode traditionelle". Personally I don't think there's another sparkling wine that can beat champagne, but for my money a decent brut cava comes a close second at a fraction of the price. May I recommend Waitrose own-brand, which I am reliably informed (by a Waitrose wine manager) is made for them by Freixenet but sells a couple of quid a bottle cheaper.
