Ferry To Ireland

Is it possible to just turn up at the ferry port and catch a ferry across to Ireland?Or does it need to be booked?
Im going to staying in Wales for a month in April and might fancy going across for a day or two.

You would possibly be able to walk on as a foot passenger but I think you would have to book if taking a vehicle.

I've always just turned up, often with a car.
Of course, things change.
