Crowns

I had 4 crowns fitted about 11 or 12 years ago. One tooth had root canal treatment but the other 3 still have roots. (I had an accident involving an Ayrshire cow...)
Anyway, do crowns need renewed at a certain point? I'm having a bit of pain in the one without the root. I'm planning on phoning my dentist in the morning, but wondered if anyone can shed some light?
I'm hugely scared of the dentist (bless 'im, he does try!), so I don't relish the thought of having them replaced!

I'll come with you but be warned - I don't do sympathy. I will give you a sticker if you are very brave and well behaved

I'm very lucky, Conn. My dentist is lovely. He shows me everything before he sticks it in my mouth (no way for that to not sound rude.), explains everything to me and is generally a sweetie.
In fact he's semi-retired now and has kept only a few clients on. I'm one of them, he's scared to pass me on to some other poor sod.

An update...
Couldn't get my own dentist on Monday (he's only part time), but got to see him yesterday. Spent the afternoon getting root canal! Turns out that the tooth next the the one where I had already had root canal had started to die out. Dentist reckons it goes back to the original kicking incident.
Not as painful as I'm sure it could have been, he really is a brilliant dentist.
Tooth now tender but miles better than it was,
Mr P came and held my hand - he wouldn't wear marigolds, Mrs O, the meanie.
