Office Stuff?

This may be the wrong place to ask, but is there an alternative, FREE sort of Microsoft Office? I had Office on my desktop, on this thing I am asked to pay for it!! I stutter with indignation, but if I must, I must.... Thanks for any information

There are several free alternatives but by far the most ppoular (and which is used by many schools, police forces, local authorities and health authorities) is Apache OpenOffice:

The major commercial alternative to Microsoft Office used to be the Lotus software sold by IBM. When IBM decided to no longer compete with Microsoft, they generously placed their software into the public domain. It's now know as IBM Lotus Symphony, and completely free. If, for some reason, you don't like Apache OpenOffice, it might well be worth a look:

There is also Softmaker Office Free, which isn't Java based. The PC I'm using now came with Office Pro installed, but before getting it I was using Softmaker rather then Open Office because it loaded a lot faster, was compatible with Office, and had a (in my opinion) nicer layout than OO.

Thanks both for your answers, I will be taking up the Open Office one, life at the mo too full to even sit still with a lap top!!.....or even answer your very welcome suggestions!!
