Cat Keeps Jumping On Kitchen Tops

For some reason the bloody cat has taken a liking to the kitchen work tops. He never ever used to jump on the sides but now he's on them all the time. I was making a sarnie yesterday and he jumped up right next to me as if it's just ok.

It's gross.

I already use a citric cleaner but that obviously doesn't put him off and I never keep any food out.

Any suggestions to stop the little bugger?

Re the hissing, it's much easier to growl like a dog than to try to do a cat hiss noise. It depends on the cat, I suppose, but both ours scarper straight away

I tried the "speaking to ASBO" on his own level thing. Trouble is, ASBO thinks he is superior to everyone (apart from when he wants to snuggle). Last time I tried talking to him on his level I nearly lost my nose.

I tried the "GET DOWN!" thing followed by unceremoniously dumping him on the floor. Good game that. Could go on for hours.

So I followed it with "GET DOWN" and a squirt from a kitchen spray bottle filled with water. Now all I have to do is pick up the bottle and he KNOWS!

Double sided sellotape strategically placed. To hiss frighteningly at a cat, place tip of tongue behind top front teeth and with mouth open exhale so that cheeks vibrate. Should sound somewhere between daffy duck and darth vader..:-)
Jomifl, I am laughing at the "between daffy duck and darth vadar". I shall practise this on my walk to the shop.
It was a bit tongue in cheek barmaid, let us know how many cats (or anything else) you terrify..
Nothing I do would terrify my cat.

Evian...I'm with you on the microwave thing.

Think ill give the hissing thing a miss this time. My neighbours already think I'm a nut but.

What are all these removed answers I keep missing?

Hissy Fit? lol!
Excellent result Barmaid, perhaps with a bit more development we may have a WMD.(you weren't wearing a duck outfit and wearing a Darth Vader helmet were you by any chance as this might skew the results a little).
No Jomifl, I save those outfits for Thursdays.
My sister thought she had a perfect method. Rigged up an oven tray, a string, and 6 empty cans. RESULT; the cat was quite unperturbed with the tumbling cans and it had a sniff inside them to make sure they didn't still contain cat food.
Blue used to do that and I'd just flick water at her. She soon got the message.

No Millie, that's Grumpy Cat. My boy is much prettier :)

I'd do the water thing but that won't stop him when I'm not home.

The cat. Every time.
If you have a high barstool put is next to the work tops.
Sit your cat on it and reward him with a little piece of chicken. Every time he tries to go on the work top put him back on the stool and reward him again with a piece of chicken (or whatever he likes). Yo have to repeat it often, it works. Just be patient.
