My friend has just been given a desktop computer and was to know if they can make it wireless ? Can you?

Yes. They might want to put in a proper card, or just get a usb wireless adaptor.

In what way wireless ?

You can get wireless mice and keyboards.
You can probably fit a card to achieve a wireless link to your modem/router and the net.
You'll still need to plug it into the mains power.

The best bet for desktop computers is something like this...

then you can position the antenna so it's not tucked down the back of a metal case.

(Don't just buy the above card without first checking the computer has a spare PCI slot to plug the card into.)

Actually... *the* best bet for any computer is to use a wired connection if at all possible... but if you really can't run a cable from the router to the computer then that's the next best option ^
