If the exhaust gasses indicator (small engine) on a 53 Vectra is on whilst driving. Is it a indication that the lambda sensor needs replacing

Possibly, there are other reasons for the warning light to come on. You need the fault codes to be read, to try and sort it out.
Is the exhaust blowing? this would effect the C/O / Lamba reading.
Either the lambda sensor is faulty or it is working correctly and sensing an exhaust gas problem. Get it plugged into diagnostics and the fault code will tell you which is true.
